Must see today in Zurich: Opening ANYMORE ANYWAY - Elena Habicher Solo Exhibition

The exhibition “Anymore Anyway” presents paintings, objects and a written work by the artists Elena Habicher.

Elena Habicher’s paintings show forms melting into each other like wax. Occasionally you can find indicated woman shapes, however the artist gives plenty of room for the visitor’s association: “I try to leave things naturally unsaid.” With her objects she proceeds similarly. At once familiar and disconcerting, they show sometimes defined, sometimes undefined forms, which can be a reminiscence of the female anatomy. The red tone is dominating, which she is always using to describe “the inside” creating a tension between the inside and the outside. The basis of her works are the so-called “contemporary fairy tales”, a series of short stories about women, who have been abused, mistreated or misunderstood. They serve as inspiration, background stories or as possibility to close the gap between written metaphors and real objects.

Only during the women’s movement in the 60s and 70s did the female body become a subject for female artists; mostly shown in an aggressive and provocative way trying to revise the sexualised image of the female body. Elena Habicher is taking an subtle approach to this subject; she doesn’t want to offend but ask questions. Already at a very young age she was interested in the woman’s role, how she is dealing with social and personal issues, her life, the relationships with friends, family and partners. In the difficult time after the Tajik civil war and the escape to the Caucasus, her father left the family in the ruins of an unfinshed house. Elena’s mother tried to survive with her children in a time, which was characterized by struggle, frustration and fear. Through art Elena finally found a way to express her thoughts about the issue “women in an imperfect world”.

“I like the thought of an imperfect world and especially the thought about a woman who lives a life that consists of a bunch of unwanted things and even unwanted thoughts.” (Elena Habicher)

Elena Habicher (*1977) was born in Tajikistan and grew up in Northern Caucasus, Russia. Since 2004 she lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. Her work was part of numerous group exhibitions in Switzerland, Germany, Italy and the United States.
